Bunderful News – January 2008

Bunderful Humor!

We thought this sign from Animal Match Rescue Team’s website was Perfect for the New Year coming up! How about we all make a resolution to spay and neuter all our weird friends and relatives? What a difference it could make! : )

Bunderful Legend!

Why Some Rabbits Have Pink Eyes

A long, long time ago when the world was very new and all the animals were learning why they were created, the Maker of Animals spoke to the rabbits.

"You must ensure our world continues by helping to feed the eagles and the foxes, for without them and others of their kind, all life on our world will soon die out. In gratitude, I grant you the ability to run very fast so many of you will escape. I also grant you many other gifts which will allow your family to increase. Rabbits will always be!"

One odd-looking little white rabbit with pink eyes spoke up, saying "But Maker, what about me? I look really different than my brothers and sisters and my eyes are so sensitive I can't bear to go outside during the daylight. I'm afraid my family will disappoint you and fail in your plans for us."

The Maker gently took up the white rabbit and spoke thus, "Oh, sweet bunny, you have a very special gift! You are all white to show the rabbits' pure love, kindness, and gentleness to all the humans in this new world. You and many others of your kind, white or not, will be chosen to live with fortunate humans who need and appreciate the very special connection between
humans and many of my animals."

"Maker," said the white bunny, "my family will gladly give love to those who seek it. But still I wonder why my eyes are pink - so different than all these other rabbits."

The Maker stroked the fur of this oh-so-curious, smart little rabbit, now called Bunny. "Well, My Own, your kind in particular will be those most blessed of rabbits who will be able to see their beloved humans through rose-colored eyes!"

Confucius

I am the most handsome bunny boy on Planet Earth. My coat is the color of an Alaskan snow wolf. They call it “lilac” but all the bunny girls think it’s very macho. I flatten out for pets and close my eyes. I call it “Pet Zen”. I’m a 9 lb bundle of love who needs to have more room to play than a 2 x 3 ft c-c-c-c-cage. Please come get me.

Love, Confucius

To meet me, fill out our application form at www.RabbitMatch.org and one of my humans will contact you very soon.

In Memoriam -- December 5, 2007

Every moment of life has its risks. Certainly surgery and anesthesia sharply elevate the baseline. Thus we have lost our wonderful, precious Luciana bunny while doing our best to ensure a happy life for her. She was with us for three months never getting to the front of the S/N list until now because dwarf bunnies kept crowding in and and our beautiful Luci was a medium sized girl. She made herself at home in her enclosure on the third level. She was our diva and social butterfly. Luciana was right there making eye contact with every visitor. Her delicate lacy , patterned "eye makeup" so enhanced her beautiful dark eyes. Her ears had the same lacy pattern. She bounced around the x-pen. It was such a joy and pleasure to hold her and carry her to and fro. Even though Luci was the farthest bun from the refrigerator, she demanded her greens first by furiously boxing her enclosure door when greens came out. She chowed down with gusto, compliments to the greengrocer. There she was with her cute little face and tender pink lips, enjoying her cilantro to the last stem.

Unlike Luciana's original family, we didn't abandon her. Her body will be cremated just like that of any cherished, owned pet and her ashes scattered in our Bunny Garden.

Grooming Your Rabbit

Because of their constant shedding, rabbits need to be brushed at least weekly to remove loose hair. You will have to brush daily during heavy sheds. Rabbits will shed in different ways – some will take a couple of weeks or more to lose their old coat, while others will lose theirs all in a few days. Much of the hair can often be removed by gently plucking it out with your fingers. Fine-toothed flea combs made for cats work very well to comb out loose rabbit hair.

This is Pythagoras who came to us with very matted fur from not being brushed. : (

Am I the cutest boy you’ve ever seen?!

I am a true lover boy. Pet me and I’m yours forever.

I’m looking for a home with piano so I can stretch out my long, lean body while you play my concertos and symphonies. I'm the sweetest rabbit ever and I have 5 inch long ears to go with my lanky (pettable) physique. I love to sit on comfy laps and doze (while being petted some more). Get in touch with your softer self!! My sparkling rose eyes will enchant you. Come visit me!!

Bunderful Wishes!

We have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

Dangerously over limit, we recently sent out an urgent email asking for a safe place for five of our furkids – Chad, Summatra, Nijinsky, Katmandu and Phoenix. Twenty-four hours later they had found a safe haven with Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue in Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix!? From Los Angeles!? Yep. Erika Royal, the heart of Brambley Hedge, will be giving five – yes, all five – of our bunnies a second chance to find their forever home.

They’re heading to their new home next weekend.

Phoenix is camera shy

Thank you, Brambley Hedge!

Bunderful News November 2007

Bunderful Insight!

Post adoption panic: When you and your bun get home…

1) Put carrier on the floor and open the door. The bun will come out when he feels safe (and curious).

2) A litterbox, hay, green veggies, timothy pellets, crock or sipper bottle of water and a designated rabbit area are all she needs for now.

3) There will be something you won’t expect, flow with it.

4) Expect her to do ‘rabbity’ things. Everything she does is connected to survival in the wild.

5) So, don’t take anything personally (remember, this is all new to him).

6) Give him a month to really settle in, feel safe and show his full range of personality.

7) Call for help! RabbitMatch.org is always available if you have a question about your bun.

Bunderful Bun Facts!

Wild Rabbits and the Habits of Rabbits in the Wild

Wild rabbits live in burrows or underground passages which they excavate, by means of their strong hind-feet, in the soil of sandbanks, fields, woods, etc. The animals are sociable, and the burrows belonging to any one community are collectively known as a warren. The passages of the warren communicate with the outside world by means of openings, some of which are in common use, while others seem to be used mainly as "bolt-holes" in cases of sudden alarm. A rabbit which is bolting to its burrow exposes the white underside of its tail, and thus acts as a danger signal and guide to its fellows. When a rabbit is startled, or puzzled by seeing some unusual object, it generally thumps the ground with its long hind-foot; other rabbits in the neighborhood are thereby warned.

Bunderful Wishes!

Rabbit Match has an awesome website (check us out!). This gift to Los Angeles’s homeless buns was created by Angie O’Neal, one of our irreplaceable volunteers.

Angie's brain is an active one. So she’s heading back to school for an advanced degree along with volunteering her time and talent in support of another very worthwhile cause (more on that later).

We, the buns and volunteers at Rabbit Match, want to thank Angie for her wonderful contribution to us that’s made forever homes a reality for (at current count!) 76 wonderful rabbits! Because Rabbit Match’s website continues, that number will continue to grow.

Thanks, Angie.

And because we’re so proud of our website, we are entering the Web Marketing Association’s WebAward 2008 competition.

“Few Website award programs recognize the individual achievement behind the creation of today's top web sites the way we do at the Web Marketing Association. We believe it is important to recognize the people and organizations responsible for developing some of the most effective and best web sites on the Internet today…

…But more than just an award program that Internet marketing experts use to increase website visibility, the WebAward provides a benchmark by which all Website development can be judged.”

Bunderful Bun Facts!

Do rabbits really use "language?"

Well, scientifically speaking, no. One of the primary characteristics of language is syntax. Syntax means that words are put together into phrases using ordering rules that affect meaning. It's part of grammar.

The scientific term for how rabbits communicate is "signaling." Signals don't necessarily have to be presented in a particular order. They can change meaning under different contexts, though, and that certainly is important in rabbit communication.

Nonscientifically speaking, though, a language can be any system of signs, signals and utterances that are used to communicate. Under that definition, anyone would agree that rabbits have a very sophisticated language for a non-human species.

I'm a large, beautiful, easygoing bun who would be a great companion for a special human or boy bun who needs some love (check out my handsome neighbor, Confucius!). I'm very calm and steady. Just right for a mellow human. (We can sit by the pool and drink Pina Coladas.)

I'm a very special rabbit girl.

I'm already spayed and litterbox trained too. On 8/1 I weighed 8.14 lbs and my humans say I'm full grown.
